Forelimb of a Triceratops

Vorderbein eines Triceratops

This is a forelimb of a Triceratops. A Triceratops was a large herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period (66 million years ago) in what is now North America. It could grow up to nine meters long and reach a shoulder height of nearly three meters. It weighed approximately 12,000 kilograms. Its head was nearly two meters long and featured a bony frill that covered the neck and part of the shoulders. Triceratops had three horns—two above the eyes and one on the nose. The name means “three-horned face.” The function of the frill and horns has long been debated. Traditionally, they were thought to serve as defensive weapons against predators like Tyrannosaurus rex, but more recently, they are believed to have been used, for example, as displays of dominance or for mating purposes.
