Tower

Turm

This is a scale model of a tower that formed part of a monastery founded by the Cistercian monks from the Ter Doest Abbey in Vlaanderen. They played a large part in land reclamation in this area. Their motto was “Prayer and Work” They built dykes and sluices on land they had bought or received as gifts. They kept large flocks of sheep and traded with other countries. They founded new monasteries with the profits. Excavations between 1979 and 1998 brought to light not only a 13th century settlement, but also the remains of a church and cementary.143 graves were found. These were mostly of men who probably worked for the monks. They also found the foundations of a 9 x 8 metres tower. The original height is estimated at 6 to 10 metres. It was possibly the abbot’s home and a storage area. From the air it is clear that Historyland forms an important link between well-known woodlands in Hellevoetsluis such as the Kooisteebos and the Ravensehout. These green “islands “are necessary for the free movement of animals and plants. One of Historyland’s aims is to contribute to the ecological recovery of the landscape.
