Saber-toothed cat

Säbelzahnkatzen

The saber-toothed cat was undoubtedly the king of the mammoth steppe. This top predator of the mammoth steppe was extremely rare, considering the scarcity of its remains. A date from a lower jaw, recovered from the North Sea bed, revealed that it lived here until at least 28.000 years ago. This finding inspired the Rotterdam artist Remie Bakker to create a life sized model of the extinct feline. This replica shows the predator adapted to its environment; the dry, treeless mammoth steppe. It has been created with a greyish coat with a few black stripes as an adaptation to its environment as commonly seen on wolves and foxes.
