Cave bear

Höhlenbär

The cave bear was mostly found in the mountains of Central Europe. Their relatively abundant fossils indicate that they were a common inhabitant. The bears, used the caves for hibernation and many animals, died there. Some caves have been completely filled with their remains. For example, over 30.000 bears have died in the Drachenhohle in Austria; not at the same time though, but over a long period of tens of thousands of years. Complete skeletons are rarely found. Various activities in caves, such as the movement of visiting animals, and also running water, have jumbled the bones of the skeletons. However, using the enormous amount of excavated bones, it is
possible to assemble skeletons, as exhibited in the museum: a small cave bear family with father, mother and young.
