Camarasaurus

Camarasaurus

Left Hind Leg
Original bones, heavily fossilized.
The upper part, the femur, weighs 42 kilograms on its own!

3D-Printed Skull
The teeth show that the Camarasaurus was a herbivore.
The Camarasaurus lived during the Jurassic period, 156 to 146 million years ago.
It was a sauropod dinosaur, meaning it belonged to the main group of “reptile-footed” dinosaurs, as opposed to other main groups such as the ornithopods (“bird-footed”) and the theropods (“mammal-footed”).
It is believed that the Camarasaurus was preyed upon by predators such as the Allosaurus, a very fast and large carnivorous theropod dinosaur.

The Camarasaurus grew to a length of 15 to 20 meters. The weight of these large dinosaurs is estimated to have been around 20,000 kilograms. Its neck and tail were relatively short, while its belly was extremely large and round. This dinosaur had a short but high skull, a replica of which is displayed here.

The forelimbs were shorter than the hind limbs. This left hind leg is approximately 270 cm tall! Several species of Camarasaurus existed, and they lived mainly in North America. These bones were discovered in the Morrison Formation on the Red Fork Ranch in Kaycee, Wyoming, USA.
