In nature there is a great diversity of life which increases the chance of survival. Agriculture, as it is today, has many harmful consequences such as the enormous use of fossil fuels, and the monoculture in our crops and livestock. Diseases can easily spread which leads to mass destruction of animals and spraying of crops with toxins. Devastation of land and soil erosion are also examples. Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature, of thoughtful observation rather than thoughtless labour, and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single product system.
