The auroch skull

Auerochse Schädel

Besides woolly rhinoceroses and woolly mammoths, wild horses and wild bovines were also very abundant on the mammoth steppe. The auroch also lived in the North Sea region. It was much rarer than the bison, but about the same size. The aurochs is the ancestor of the familiar modern cattle. It could easily be as tall as 2 metres or more in shoulder height. The exhibition “mammoth steppe” contains a complete skull of an aurochs from the Late Pleistocene, alongside a skull of a modern cow. It is easy to see the difference in size between those two.
